Sunday, 10:30 am-noon, at Elmwood Park Zoo. Frog Watch Training Session. FrogWatch USA is a citizen science program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums that provides people an opportunity to learn about wetlands in their communities and report data on the calls of local frogs and toads. Come to a special training session to learn how to distinguish the calls of Norristown's native frog species and help Elmwood Park Zoo contribute valuable frog population data to a national database.

Monday, ACPPA's 8-week spring session begins. Art, music, and theater classes meet during the school week in the evenings and our preschool dance classes meet Saturday mornings.  Students participating in the spring 8-week session will also be invitied to display their work in the Spring Art Exhibition and/or perform in their Spring Concert in late May. Ongoing through April 29, The Historical Society of Montgomery County (1654 DeKalb) is running the exhibit: Norristown Remembered, The Art of Frank Batson. Norristown native Frank Batson’s paintings are inspired by his memories of Norristown and the surrounding area from the 1940’s, ‘50’s, and ‘60’s. Many of the buildings and places are long gone, but through his art, they are brought back to life. Norristown Police Department's Citizen Police Academy begins April 19th. The 10-week program will expand citizens’ knowledge and understanding of the law and explore police procedures.  Approximately 25 hours of instruction, taught in two and a half hour segments. Topics: NPD policing strategy, dynamics of patrol, crime investigations, emergency communications and dispatch operations, as well as riding along with patrol. Participants will meet every Wednesday from 6:30p.m. to 9 pm. and they must attend 75 percent or more of the scheduled classes in order to be eligible to graduate and receive a certificate. Class size is limited to allow greater interaction between students and instructors. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to apply and be a resident of Norristown. Applications for the Norristown Citizen Police Academy can be picked up at the station located at 235 East Airy Street, Norristown, PA 19401 or can be requested via email NorristownCPA@norristown.org. Norristown Municipality is seeking proposals from qualified vendors to provide, operate and manage food and beverage concession operations and recreational activities (like kayak rentals) year-round at Riverfront Park. Go to this link if you're interested.

ROCK THE BLOCK this Weekend

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY's Rock The Block is the big event in town this weekend. A whole day of volunteering to help revitalize a part of N-town. See details below.

Friday, September 16, 9 am-2 pm. PARK(ing) day. In Norristown, four parking spaces in front of the Montgomery County Courthouse will be transformed into public spaces (by the county, one presumes--and they don't say if they mean Main Street or Swede). PARK(ing) Day's mission is to “call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat." Once again, the county waited until the last minute to publicize this, but according to the PARK(ing) Day website, anyone willing to pay the meter on a space is eligible to take part. In fact, you can do it anywhere in town, especially if there's a meter, because as long as you pay, no one can tell you to move along. Create a 9x18 foot public park.

Please be advised that streets in the race route will be closed at 8:30am. After the race, the World Famous Budweiser Clydesdales will march down Main Street starting at 9:20 am, beginning at the 700 Block of Main Street (East or West was NOT listed, probably east), ending at the Courthouse. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early for a good spot. Parking will be limited, street parking IS free on weekends, the Septa-Norristown Transportation Center parking lot and the County lot will also be open for a charge. Special Council Meeting, Then The Fun Stuff

Tonight, Friday, September 2, 6 pm at Municipal Hall. SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING to appoint "a resident" to the at-large council seat vacated by Marlon Milner. I'm wondering why Council isn't announcing the name of the resident before the meeting, why they're doing this on the Friday evening of a holiday weekend when the seat has been vacant since August 3, and why they only gave residents one day's notice. If I find out any of these answers, I'll let you know.

Lots of Events For Kids This Week

Before I list the coming events, I want to mention that the Youth Dragon Boat Team competed in their first races last Saturday and did really well. So we have another youth sports team in N-town that we can brag about.

Starting Saturday at the Norristown Library and running through Saturday, August 13: Summer Reading Club for children ages 0-12. Win prizes for reading. Pick up a summer reading log in the Children’s Department and keep track of the minutes you read. For every two hours you read or have been read to, you win a free book and a chance to win a bicycle or a $50 Barnes & Noble gift certificate. (Maximum 10 free books per child.) Tuesday is ELECTION DAY. Polling places are open from 7 am-8 pm. This election is for registered Democrats and Republicans only. No independents. They'll put in a 14 or 15-hour day on Tuesday, and, at least the folks I work with, do their best to make sure everyone gets a chance to vote who wants to, no matter who you are.

Thursday, 5 pm, at the Historical Society of Montgomery County (1654 Dekalb) Historian Milt Diggins will present "Stealing Freedom along the Mason-Dixon Line" about Thomas McCreary, the Notorious Slave Catcher from Maryland. McCreary lived in Cecil County, Maryland, the mid-point between Philadelphia, a refuge for freedom seekers, and Baltimore, a major slave market. Free and open to the public.

Once again, hardly anything going on this week in town, which is a good thing, because of the snowstorm.  Hopefully most of us will be out and about by Monday (though alleys don't get plowed, so those of us who must park behind our houses will see you in the spring). ACPPA's Summer Camp Registration is open. This summer's theme is Animal Planet and will encourage campers (ages 3-12) to consider the many ways in which we share this world with other living things and how they inspire us. In addition to intensive creative explorations of visual arts, dance, music, and drama, students will enjoy weekly swimming trips, zoo and aquarium field trips, and visits from special guests. November 28th is Small Business Saturday. I'd hoped that Norristown's Better Block Project would happen that day to encourage everyone to go downtown, but as usual, our government paid out good money, then let the ball drop. The Norristown Business Association's leadership also let us down this year by dissolving the organization without even consulting with its members. For Small Business Saturday, we're on our own. So I'm going to challenge you. Go to your favorite small businesses in N-town--restaurants, shops, whatever--and post a photo to Facebook or other social media site. Let's spread the word about West Marshall, and about our great food places. And remember, spending your shopping dollars in N-town this holiday season will give our economy a boost.
