Children entering grades 2 through 6 can sign up for this FREE, fun science enrichment program provided by The Franklin Institute. This year we explore the Science of Space. Through active, hands-on learning, students explore the sun’s energy, the phases of the moon, human survival in space, and how rockets overcome Earth’s gravity. Next Saturday, June 9, Social: 12:30 pm; Presentation: 1 pm, at the Historical Society of Montgomery County (1654 Dekalb). Making History Greater Series: Montgomery County Trolleys. Presenter Mike Szilagyi will speak about the 140 miles of trolley lines that once ran through Montgomery County. In the first half of the 20th century, a wide array of trolley cars rolled over Montgomery County’s rails, from quaint open streetcars rumbling through borough streets to sleek 80-mile-an-hour trolleys sailing across open fields in Upper Gwynedd and Hatfield Townships. The cars had zero emissions, and some lines were powered by renewable hydroelectric power. Books will be available for purchase and signing. FREE admission. On Tuesday, June 12, 9 am-7pm at the Montgomery County Human Services Bldg (Dekalb and Fornance), Battle of the Badges Blood Drive. Battle of the Badges is a friendly competition among first responders to see who can recruit the most blood donors from their communities. On Saturday, June 16, the Norristown Preservation Society will once again host their annual Flea Market at Selma Mansion. If you'd like to be a vendor, indoor spaces are limited and filling up, first come first serve. $20/space, 8×4 feet bring your own table. Outdoor spaces are 8×8 feet bring your own table, chair, and canopy if you want. $15/space. These are pick your own space when you arrive. But I suspect that the older residents who usually organize things are dropping out of things and younger people aren't stepping up to take their places. A reminder that December 11 is supposedly the last day for leaf collection in Norristown. I don't know about your neighborhood, but half our trees still have leaves on them here. But anyway, get out there and rake soon, or better yet, put the leaves on your garden beds or lawn, or in a compost bin. Better for the soil, plus beneficial insects like woolly bear caterpillars will have a place to stay (under the leaves) over the winter.

On Wednesday, December 13, the Lt. Patty Simons Food Drive will be gathering at Elmwood Park Zoo and they'll need volunteers anytime between 8 am-11 pm to help collect, sort, and box donated nonperishable goods for this years drive. Heated tents, food and a DJ will make the volunteer time enjoyable. Please come and help.

FREE Programs, Flu Shots, and More This Week

Saturday, 1-5 pm, The Norristown Project Fall Cleanup. Volunteers are needed to assist with cleaning, weeding, and mulching the flower beds around the trees in the downtown area. In addition to this project, volunteers will work on cleaning the sidewalks. Meet at the intersection of Main Street and Dekalb Sts. Free street parking is available on weekends in the municipality. Next Saturday, July 8, noon-2 pm at Riverfront Park (1 Haws Ave). Birding With Binoculars, a FREE program presented by the John James Audubon Center. Observe wildlife right on the Schuylkill River. Explore local waterfowl and learn how birds survive in their habitats by finding food, water, shelter, and space. Participants get a pair of binoculars to use during the program. Friday, June 2, 7:30 pm at Elmwood Park Zoo's bottom parking lot. If you missed the movie "Moana" at Centre Theatre last week, you can catch it at the Zoo's first drive-in movie of the season. $20 per car for non-members, $15 for members. Walk-in for $5/person.

Sunday, 2-5 pm at Norristown Arts Building, 619 W Washington St. Artist Reception for Sun Sook Kim, Philadelphia artist of colorful and bright paintings and drawings. She expresses the painful experiences of her childhood in an abusive family and her current battle with breast cancer. Reception is FREE and open to the public. Next Friday, June 9, 8 pm at Centre Theater (208 Dekalb), the King of Prussia Players production of "Chicago" opens. $25 adults, $15 children under 13 and seniors over 64. The show will run weekends, Fridays, Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 2 pm, through June 25.
