MLK Day of Service (sort of) and Other Events This Week

Not sure what's happening (or not happening) with N-town, but this is the first year there hasn't been a slew of service projects around town for Martin Luther King Day. The Fire Department will be doing a smoke alarm blitz on Green Street, the Library has an all day kids' activity, and there's an assembly at the high school. But I haven't seen any hands-on projects for adult volunteers like we usually have (cleaning, painting, working with food pantries, etc.).

Friday, January 12, today is the LAST DAY to register for the free Suicide Prevention Training Seminar to take place next Saturday at Christ UCC Church (Marshall and Noble). Details below under "Next Saturday."

Saturday, 8-midnight, Five Saints Distilling. Snow White and the Huntsman will perform. No cover.

Monday, 10 am-1 pm, NAHS cafeteria. Young Scholars Day. Speakers and performances. Breakout sessions.

Monday, 6-7:30 pm, Montgomery County OIC, 2nd Floor (1101 Arch). College Tour Information Session. First information session for the HBCU Spring Break College Tour. Preliminary itinerary, prices, colleges to be visited, and field questions. For information, call 610-279-9700.

Tuesday, 6:30 pm, Municipal Hall. Council Workshop.

Got Cabin Fever? Too Bad

The most disturbing thing about Norristown lately is how little seems to be going on in any one week. Or, at least, how little that is going on is posted on the local calendars or social media. But I suspect that the older residents who usually organize things are dropping out of things and younger people aren't stepping up to take their places. If you have an upcoming event and you want people to come to it, please list it 2 weeks before on Nextdoor.com, Norristown.org, and/or The Norristown Project Calendar.

Here are this week's offerings:

Saturday, January 6, 8 pm, Centre Theater. Comedy Show: Phil Forrence and Friends. $10. Tickets at Forrence.brownpapertickets.com.

Sunday, 2-5 pm, Elmwood Park Zoo. FREE admission to Norristown Borough residents on the first Sunday of each month. Adults must show photo ID as proof of residency.

Wednesday, 1-3:30 pm, Norristown Public Library Board Room. Mary's Matinee. FREE movie the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. This week: "The Glass Castle." Drop in. Contact Mary Motta for info, 610-278-5100 x111 or mmotta@mclinc.org.

Wednesday, 7 pm, Municipal Hall. Zoning Board Hearing. Agenda at this link.
