Independence Holiday Festivities (and the rest of the week's events)

Theater and music this weekend, then activities for the July 4 holiday begin on Monday night.

Friday, June 30, 7:30 pm, Theatre Horizon (410 Dekalb) presents a concert reading of "Zanna Don't (A Musical Fairy Tale)". Pay what you decide.

Saturday, 8-11 pm, Five Saints Distilling (Main and Green). Jazz-180 performs.

Sunday, 1-4 pm at Coffee Talk (507 W Marshall). Open Mic.

Sunday, 2-5 pm at Elmwood Park Zoo, residents who live within Norristown's boundaries who present valid photo ID may enter the zoo free of charge.

Sunday, 7 pm at the Elmwood Park Bandshell, Summer Concert Series presents Diamond Reno (with the music of Neil Diamond). Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Concession stand will be open.

Monday, 6-8 pm at Norristown Library (Powell and Swede). Robo Code: Hands-on learning using iPad apps and our robots, Dash and Dot. Kids will learn to code through fun projects and puzzles. Class size limited to 18. For kids entering grades 3-6.

Monday, 7 pm  at Christ United Church of Christ, W Marshall and Noble Sts (parking lot). Annual Independence Eve Concert. FREE Peace Concert. Come enjoy the music of the Song Sheets (Plus), including folk songs, early American, multi-cultural, inspirational and patriotic selections. Bring a chair. Park on the surrounding streets. Hotdogs, snacks and homemade goodies available. Donations accepted to benefit the church's youth programs. In the event of rain, the concert will be inside the church.

Tuesday, July 4th Festivites:
10 am - Parade beginning at Dekalb and Airy Sts. The route will proceed west on Airy, right onto Astor, left onto W Marshall, right onto Stanbridge, right onto Sterigere, and end at the bottom of the hill in Elmwood Park.
11:30 am - Rest of the day in Elmwood Park, concerts begin with a performance by Old School.
1 pm - Kids' crafts, rides, food trucks, and a beer garden.
6 pm - Wildflower performs
9 pm - Fireworks.
Wednesday, 1:30 pm (also Thursday) at Norristown Library. Leap Into Science, family science exploration by the Franklin Institute. For kids 4-7 and their parents/grandparents.

Wednesday, 6:30-9 pm at Municipal Hall (conference room). The NPD will host a Neighborhood Watch training class. Topics covered include crime reporting, active violence, and a Q&A session. Contact Gina Davies at 610-270-0490 or email gdavies@norristown.org

Thursday, 11 am-2:30 pm on East Main in front of the Courthouse. Norristown Farmers Market. Every Thursday through Oct 26. Variety of fruits and vegetables, farm fresh.

Next Saturday, July 8, noon-2 pm at Riverfront Park (1 Haws Ave). Birding With Binoculars, a FREE program presented by the John James Audubon Center. Observe wildlife right on the Schuylkill River. Explore local waterfowl and learn how birds survive in their habitats by finding food, water, shelter, and space. Participants get a pair of binoculars to use during the program. Great for kids and families.

Theater, Concerts, Sports, and More

After the rains today and tomorrow morning, the weekend is supposed to be nice. And oddly enough, most of this week's events in town are on Tuesday and Thursday.

Friday, June 23, 8 pm at Centre Theater (208 Dekalb). This is the LAST weekend for the King of Prussia Players production of "Chicago." $25 adults, $15 children under 13 and seniors over 64. Last shows on Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets and info at www.kofpplayers.com  Also August Moon is offering 10% discount to all ticket holders before or after the shows.
Saturday, 8:30 am-2:30 pm at Norristown Youth Eagles Field (1001 Sterigere). Youth Eagles Football Camp presented by Norristown Men of Excellence and the Youth Eagles. For all children ages 5-14. Parent MUST register child.

Saturday, 10 am-1 pm. Phoenix Martial Arts Center (401 W Elm, 2nd floor) presents "Your Health & Wellness Matters." Learn about the benefits of Tai Chi. Learn why it's important to read labels not just for what you put in your body but what you put on your body. Relax & de-stress with a chair massage.

Sunday, 7 pm at the Elmwood Park Bandshell, Summer Concert Series presents the Sofa Kings. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on (though you're going to want to get up and dance). Concession stand will be open.

Tuesday, 1:30-3 pm at Norristown Library. 3-day Mini-Theater Workshop for children 9-12. Participants will get the opportunity to explore character development, scene study and monologues through group activities and theatre games.  Limit 10 students. Registration is required. Tuesday, 2-4 pm at Norristown Library Community Room. Make a Micro-Garden workshop for TEENS. Plant, plan, and care for a container garden to enjoy all summer. Personalize a planting pot and fill it with herbs, flowers, and decorations of your choice! All supplies provided. Kids' Activities (now that school's out) and Grownup Stuff, too

I don't know about the rest of you, but I could use a break this weekend from the all-day throbbing of helicopters over the courthouse. Ten different events are happening in Norristown on Saturday alone. At least one of them is bound match your interests.

Friday, June 16, 8 pm at Centre Theater (208 Dekalb), the King of Prussia Players production of "Chicago" opens. $25 adults, $15 children under 13 and seniors over 64. Saturday, the Summer Reading Program for kids 12 and under begins at the Norristown Library. Win prizes. For every 2 hours you read, you get a free book (maximum 10 per child) and are entered in a drawing for a bicycle or a $50 Barnes and Noble gift certificate. Sign up at the library. First 100 to sign up get a free T-shirt. The program runs June 17-August 19.

Saturday, 10 am-2 pm at the George Washington Carver Center (Jacoby and Arch), ACLAMO presents healthy Family Day. Fun activities for the whole family plus information on living a healthy life. Info at 610-277-2570.

Morrison and his journey north from his family home in South Carolina to work for the Philadelphia Electric Company as a foreman in charge of building the high-tension line through the Great Valley and King of Prussia from the Conowingo Dam to Bridgeport. Saturday, 5-9 pm at George Washington Carver Center. The Healing Hearts Foundation presents The Knockout Against Violence Showcase. Special guest speakers include Murad Muhammad and Weatta Fraizer-Collins, daughter of Joe Frazier. Proceeds will go to upcoming community improvement project. Tickets are $10.

The Norristown Preservation Society hosts guest speaker Jason Love, retired Royal Marine, 0Vatican-trained demonologist and internationally renowned ghost hunter. One night only. $35. All proceeds go toward the restoration and upkeep of Selma Mansion.

She expresses the painful experiences of her childhood in an abusive family and her current battle with breast cancer. Reception is FREE and open to the public.
