How To Register To Vote In Pennsylvania

Today is National Voter Registration Day. It’s also only 2 weeks until the October 9th deadline to be registered to vote in Pennsylvania in order to participate in the November 6th election.

For PA residents, if you’re a citizen (or become one up to 30 days before the election), a resident of PA and your voting district for 30 days before the election, and you’ll be 18 years of age on November 6th ~~ if you’re NOT registered to vote, go to this link and fill out the application.

If you’re a citizen and have no intention of voting, you probably ought to move out of the country.  However, if you DO show up, even if you haven’t voted in a while, election workers like me will treat you like the prodigal son (or daughter). No fatted calf, but we do give out “I Voted” stickers. Come early and we'll still be smiling.

If you’re not sure if you’re registered, or if you’ve moved and need to update your registration, go to this link.

See you at the polls in November.

Library Cards, Cemetery Tour, Talking to Your Kids About Drugs, and More

This week's events:

Friday, September 21, 9 am-2 pm. PARK(ing) Day. That's all the info on the Municipal calendar for this event ~ no explanation, no location. I'm assuming it's downtown on Swede St like last year. What PARK(ing) Day really is ~ individuals and organizations can turn a parking spot into a private park for however long they want to feed the meter. It's held annually, globally, on the 3rd Friday of September to highlight the need for more public green space. Actually, if the county and Norristown want to do it right, they'd publicize it ahead of time and make it a friendly contest between organizations and businesses.

Saturday, 9 am-5 pm at Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library Youth Services Department. Library Card Sign-Up Month. Through Sept 30 (only one more week), kids in grades 0-12, if you don't have a card and sign up for one this month, you'll receive a free book and bookmark, plus be entered in a drawing to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Next Saturday, 2-6 pm, Riverfront Park. Riverfront Festival. Kayaking, food, music. Sponsored by the Municipality and the Norristown Chamber of Commerce. The glitch is, no parking. They're suggesting you park at the Intermediate Center on Lafayette St. and walk on the Schuylkill River Trail more than a half mile west to the park. They say it only takes 10 minutes (at a very fast walk of 3.4 MPH). At a stroll, it will take closer to 20 minutes, after which you have to go down a long flight of steps and walk into the park. And of course, you'll have to climb those steps and re-do the half mile walk when you leave. I've asked twice about parking for disabled, elderly, people with small children, etc., and they've only said they're working on it. You could try parking closer, perhaps Grace Lutheran Church parking lot, which is half the distance, but it's still a pretty good hill down Haws Ave to the park. Riverfront Park will be closed that day to regular picnickers, fishing, and boaters.

Next Saturday, 7-10 pm, Coffee Talk (507 W Marshall). Remembering Woodstock, concert with Herman Bruning, Jim Ramsey, Paul Girard and more. Donations welcome.
